PlayStation 5 Parental Controls: Setting Up Safe Gaming for Your Child

Cyber Safe Families Team5 min read

If your child received a PlayStation 5 this holiday season, setting up proper parental controls before they start playing is essential. The PS5 offers comprehensive features to manage content access, online interactions, spending, and play time, but these require careful configuration. According to Sony's official parental controls guide, the PS5 provides multiple layers of protection, though many parents don't realize these controls exist or find the settings menus confusing.

The foundation is the Family Management system, which requires creating a child account linked to your parent account—never let your child use your adult account, as this bypasses safety features. Set up Family Management through the PlayStation website or console, providing your child's date of birth to determine default content restrictions. You can manage all settings from your parent account through the console or PlayStation mobile app. Configure content restrictions using ESRB ratings to set maximum rating levels, but review individual games beyond just ratings since some E-rated games include online multiplayer features. Restrict access to the PlayStation Store if you prefer to purchase games yourself, and block specific games by title if needed.

For online communication, restrict messages, friend requests, and game invitations to "Friends Only" or "No One" for younger children, and disable voice chat or limit it to approved friends only. Enable friend request approval to control who your child interacts with online. For spending, require a password for all purchases, remove credit card information entirely, and use PlayStation Store gift cards for hard spending limits. Set daily play time limits with different settings for weekdays and weekends, and block gaming during school hours or late at night. Configure privacy settings to make profiles visible only to approved friends and hide personal information from strangers.

Review activity reports regularly with your child to start conversations about gaming habits, play games together when possible, and create an environment where your child feels comfortable reporting problems. As your child demonstrates responsible behavior, gradually relax restrictions while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Actions

  • Set up Family Management and configure content restrictions. Create a child account linked to your parent account, set maximum ESRB rating levels, and review individual games beyond just their rating numbers.
  • Restrict online communication and configure privacy settings. Limit messages, friend requests, and voice chat to approved friends only (especially for younger children), and make profiles visible only to approved friends while hiding personal information from strangers.
  • Enable purchase password protection and set spending limits. Require your password for all PlayStation Store purchases, consider removing credit card information entirely, and use gift cards for hard spending limits.
  • Set screen time limits and allowed gaming hours. Use daily limits with different settings for weekdays and weekends, and block gaming during inappropriate times to ensure it doesn't interfere with other activities.
  • Review activity reports regularly and maintain open communication. Use reports to start conversations about gaming habits, ask questions, play together when possible, and create an environment where your child feels comfortable reporting problems.
